The Handmaiden uses a Victorian crime novel as the loose inspiration for another visually sumptuous and absorbingly idiosyncratic outing from director Park Chan-wook. Described as an erotic psychological thriller, the film is inspired by the novel Fingersmith by Sarah Waters, with the setting altered from Victorian Britain to Korea under Japanese rule. A woman is hired as a handmaiden to a Japanese heiress, but secretly she is involved in a plot to defraud her.
“it was so extraordinary that I almost forgot to breathe.” The Guardian
