With stunning performances from Mzia Arabuli and newcomers Lucas Kankava and Deniz Dumanli, Akin’s fourth film offers a vibrant and evocative portrait of the city of Istanbul. The President’s Cake

From debut Iraqi director Hasan Hadi, The President’s Cake is a beautiful tale of love, friendship and resilience told from the perspective of a child growing up under Saddam Hussein’s oppressive regime. It was the first Iraqi film to feature at the Cannes Film Festival, where it premiered in the Directors’ Fortnight and won both the section’s Audience Award, as well as the festival’s prestigious Camera d’Or.
Set during the first Gulf War, Lamia, a young girl from Iraq’s Mesopotamian Marshes, lives with her grandmother Bibi and her pet cockerel Hindi in a community struggling to get by under the harsh conditions of a country suffering under sanctions and at war. But under Saddam Hussein’s dictatorship, nothing will stop his mandatory birthday celebrations, including choosing a child from each school class across the land to bake a cake in his honour. Despite Lamia’s best efforts to avoid it, knowing how difficult it will be to source the ingredients, she is picked among her peers to produce the cake, which she must do, or face the consequences.
Lamia’s quest for the ingredients takes her from the rural marshlands into the city of Baghdad, allowing Hadi to explore the gamut of Iraqi society, painting a moving portrait of the resilience of a people caught between authoritarian rule and injudicious American imperialism.

There’s a theory that we should be born with a small amount of alcohol in our blood, and that modest inebriation opens our minds to the world around us, diminishing our problems and increasing our creativity. Heartened by that theory, Martin and three of his friends, all weary high school teachers, embark on an experiment to maintain a constant level of intoxication throughout the workday. If Churchill won WW2 in a heavy daze of alcohol, who knows what a few drops might do for them and their students?
Initial results are positive, and the teachers’ little project turns into a genuine academic study. Both their classes and their results continue to improve, and the group feels alive again! As the units are knocked back, some of the participants see further improvement and others go off the rails. It becomes increasingly clear that while alcohol may have fueled great results in world history, some bold acts carry consequences.

Man-su (Lee Byung Hun), a specialist in paper manufacturing with 25 years of experience, is
so satisfied with life that he can truthfully tell himself, “I’ve got it all.” While happily passing his
days with his wife Miri (Son Yejin), their two children and two dogs, Man-su is suddenly informed
by his company that he has been fired.
“We’re sorry. We have no other choice.”
Feeling shocked as if his head had been cut off by an ax, Man-su vows to find himself a new job
within the next three months for the sake of his family. Despite his firm resolve to turn his life
around, Man-su spends over a year drifting from one job interview after another, and working
at a retail store. He eventually finds himself in danger of losing the very house that he struggled
so hard to buy.
Desperate, he visits Moon Paper out of the blue and tries to hand over his CV, but he just
ends up getting humiliated by line manager Choi Sun-chul (Park Hee Soon). Man-su knows
he is better qualified than anyone to work at Moon Paper, so he comes to a certain decision.
“If there is no opening for me, I’ll just have to get hired by creating an opening.”
Black Dog

It has since had its UK premiere at Edinburgh International Film Festival, and is set for its highly anticipated official UK and Ireland release on the 30th August.
